Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite world’s first two-way messaging solution for Smartphones announced
Qualcomm Technologies introduced Snapdragon Satellite at CES 2023, the world’s first satellite-based two-way messaging solution for premium smartphones. Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite Connectivity will connect people around the world through mobile messaging, starting with devices based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform lineup. Powered by Snapdragon 5G modem RF systems and supported by the fully operational Iridium® Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite Connectivity constellation, the new technology will enable OEMs and
other service providers to offer truly global coverage. The smartphone solution uses Iridium’s weatherproof L-band spectrum for uplink and downlink.
Key Takeaways
Qualcomm and Iridium will bring satellite connectivity to next-generation premium Android phones, and Garmin will support emergency communications. Snapdragon® Satellite provides full global pole-to-pole coverage and can enable two-way emergency messaging and other messaging applications in remote, rural and offshore areas. As satellite infrastructure and NTN constellations become available, Snapdragon Satellite will support 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks(NTN). This solution enables emergency and two-way satellite communications on devices other than smartphones.
Availability
The next generation of smartphones, to be launched in certain territories in the second half of 2023, will be able to send and receive emergency messages via Snapdragon Satellite.
